Bridgwater Carnival

This was a great way to finish this year's carnival possessions. Bridgwater is advertised as the biggest illuminated carnival in Europe and what a privilege for Streetheat to be approached by the organisers and asked to perform not only in the carnival but in the town centre as part of the organised entertainment.

The day was cold but Streetheat as normal warmed up the crowd as they led the possession through the streets of Bridgwater dressed in their bright costumes. A great day was had by all making all the hard work by many people well worth the experience of playing in this fantastic carnival. It would be very pleasant to be asked back next Year!

See a couple of pictures here which have been kindly supplied by John Bell, a visitor to the Carnival - who simply described the band and its performance as "fabulous".

Thanks from the Magdalen Project

The following note has been received following a gig for the Magdalen Project at the weekend.....

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU from every one at Magdalen to all of those who made it along to the gig here last Saturday. Once again everyone was blown away by street heat, the performances and workshop really added something special to our open day. Even though there were a relatively small number of players, the band sounded fantastic – and I have been inundated by "thank you"s and lovely comments about the band by visitors, staff and trustees…Kev even got a workshop booking!

Thanks again

Making new friends in Jersey

Fresh from their triumphant return to the Jersey Battle of Flowers early in August, Street Heat are going back to another popular haunt on Thursday 23 August, performing at Moretonhampstead Carnival. The 25-piece drumming band wowed the thousands of people who lined the Esplanade at St Helier in Jersey for the daytime (9 August) and moonlight (10 August) parades.

In brand new “Carnival” costumes for the daytime parade and new-look “Glitz” costumes for the evening performance, Street Heat proved they are still as popular as ever with Jersey residents and  holidaymakers alike. A fantastic time was had by all concerned.

This year, the band was accompanied by a news reporter from the BBC and, as a result, two reports were featured on the BBC’s early evening Spotlight news bulletins.

See the pictures here or for more pictures go to the Jersey Battle of Flowers official website and click on Bands.

Sidmouth Folk Festival - PLEASE NOTE!!

Since the Band will be performing in Jersey, we will not be able to make our usual slot on the Wednesday evening at the Sidmouth Folk Festival in the Square. However, all is not lost! To keep our supporters happy, we have approached the landlord at the Anchor Inn (in the Square) and arranged to play in the Car Park at the rear of the pub between 6.30pm and 8.30pm on Sunday, 5th August.

Jersey Battle of Flowers

We have been invited back by popular demand to perform at the famous Jersey Battle of Flowers in the Moonlight Parade on the 9th and 10th August. The Band will be putting out a strong team and giving the usual 100% effort to ensure that the many spectators are well entertained.

Street Heat play at Wedding Reception for ex-band member

Ex band member, Ruth Wood, married on Saturday, 14th October at The Mill On The Rue at Bruton in Somerset. Ruth was an active member of the band between 1998 and 2002 doing most gigs here and abroad.  After a trip to Bruton by coach on Saturday, Street Heat played a 45 minutes set in which Ruth led one piece in her wedding dress. The band wishes Ruth and her husband every success and happiness for the future.  Click here to view Ruth in her wedding dress with the band!

Street Heat play as new jet flies in from Brazil

Exeter based airline, Flybe, has become the first airline in the world to take delivery of the new 'environmentally friendly' Embraer 195 aircraft.  Following a handover ceremony at Emraer's factory near Sao Paulo, Brazil on Friday, 1st September, the aircraft flew into Exeter Airport on the morning of Thursday, 7th September. The welcoming ceremony at Exeter featured the authentic South American sounds of local band, Street Heat, whose brilliant costumes added extra colour to the occasion.

Flybe are the main sponsors of Exeter City football club and were so impressed with the performance of Street Heat at the 2004 Flybe Football Festival (when Exeter City played the Brazil national team - well the '94 World Cup winning team!) that, since the aircraft was built in Brazil, the band was invited to perform at the launch of the aircraft.

Street Heat feature in Exeter local paper, Express and Echo

The band has recently had very good coverage in Exeter local paper, Express and Echo following our appearance at the Dawlish carnival. Not only did we have excellent pictorial coverage, we also featured in the Saturday "Try Something New" feature. For copyright reasons, I am unable to publish any of their material on this site, but I would encourage locally based readers to visit the E&E office to purchase copies of the excellent photographs.

Massed Drums!.

There's a drumming event on Saturday 8 July at 11.30 am on the Cathedral Green, Exeter. The idea is to get together the largest crowd possible and to try to set a new world record (10,103 at present) for the number of people drumming at once. The gathering will be taught a Senegalese rhythm and will then drum together with groups all over the UK (no, the idea is not to get 11,000 people on Cathedral Green!) to make up the new record group.

It's organised by Christian Aid as part of the Make Poverty History campaign.

 Gig List Updated

As the title suggests, the list of Gigs for 2006 is now being formed.  Some of these on the list have yet to be confirmed, but it depends upon the number of available Sambistas.

A Fitting Finale

Recently, the partner of Street Heat member Nick Stephen unfortunately lost her mother following a short illness. Nick reports that 82 year old Wyn Wills, of Upton Pyne was an avid follower of Street Heat, listening to the Band whenever she was able.  At her funeral, track 2 of the Band's CD - "De Roba" - was played as the congregation left the Chapel.

No Samba for Santa

As some of you are aware, the Band was unable to busk in Exeter at Christmas. Click here for a letter of explanation sent to local paper, the Express and Echo.

Farewell

Our best wishes go to young James who is leaving us to take up a new job in Newbury. Many thanks for your assistance over the years.

CD Recording

On a very hot day, in front of a large crowd on The Quay, Exeter, Street Heat fronted the FESTIVAL DE PRIMAVERA. During this event, we chose to launch our CD. If you have not yet bought your copy of the CD, click here to go to a secure ordering service.  The cost is just £8, plus £1.30 to cover postage and packing

Gig List

The list of Gigs lined up for this year is now available. Not all have been confirmed. If you are a member of the Band and have not confirmed your availability, please do so as soon as possible as we may lose some bookings if insufficient numbers confirm.

Taster Workshops

As the Band members remember all to well, we held some Taster Workshops at Pinhoe during January and February 2005. You can view pictures from our workshops here  If you have just surfed to this site and you or any or your friends are interested at having a go at playing the kind of things that STREET HEAT play, then just send an email to our coordinator, who, I am sure, will welcome you with open arms. We currently rehearse on Wednesday evenings.
