In 2009, after hearing stories from my friends about them going off doing gigs, I became interested in what they were up to. I decided to go and watch them down in Lyme Regis one summer evening.
The moment that Street Heat started playing, I instantly became hooked on the infectious rhythms! I decided there and then that I wanted to be a part of such an amazing band. I had no musical experience, had never played an instrument, or even thought about joining a band! After showing my interest and going along to the workshops, it became clear that this was going to be an amazing journey for me. The people in the band were about to become a family to me. It took approximately two years to learn the instrument that I play in the band now. I play the large Surdo which is the bass of the band. I am totally committed to the band, which is good, as you need to offer that when you become a member. It comes with huge rewards as you please the crowds and get to meet lots of people! I have been to and experienced some great places with the band. All the members in band are such great people.
I am as enthusiastic about being in Street Heat as I was at the beginning. I cannot imagine not being a part of it and would encourage anyone to join who was thinking about it. Wearing the costumes in all of their glory makes you feel a part of something really special. Being a Costume Co-ordinator in the band gives me an important role within that. I now have a new and healthy social life thanks to Street Heat. Looking forward as always to the Samba season!
