Agogo Bells and Repinique
I joined Street Heat in January 2015, having first seen the band at a carnival several years before. I remember hearing the drums before the band came into view and fell in love with the rhythms and carnival atmosphere.
I grew up in the Caribbean and always loved the sounds, rhythms and colours of carnival. I wanted to learn to play steel drums but couldn’t find a steel band in Devon. However, Street Heat ticked all of the other boxes and the agogo bells have a similar sound!
A samba workshop at a work team building day reignited my interest in samba so I signed up for the next Street Heat workshop and haven’t looked back since.
The band was so welcoming and friendly, and I have played at some amazing places with a lovely group of friends.
Two years later and I still feel excited preparing for each gig…….and it’s a good excuse to dress up with feathers, face paints and glitter!
