Agogo Bells
I first saw the band outside Boots in Exeter it was about 1999, the great west run was on, and the band were banging rhythms in time with the runners. I remember the sound thumping through my body grabbing my soul, my feet involuntarily tapping, I had to join.
About six months later I saw the band again; they were wearing black glitz in Exeter Town centre, I enquired about joining and was assured I was on a list…
A while later I received a call inviting me to attend a rehearsal, the excitement was second to none, I arrived at the practice nervous trepidation running through my body, a band member ‘Nick’ handed me some bells ‘I loved it’ the samba rhythm was in my bones, my legs were dancing, my whole being was engulfed with the love of samba.
The carnival spirit has never left me, and 17 years later I am still here, loving it, the community spirit is everything, I enjoy the gigs, both home and away, the feathers, costumes and most of all the laughter.
